Chow chow (Chayote) Chutney for babies

After a long gap, here I come with a healthy yet tasty recipe for our babies who do many tantrums before finishing his/her meal.

Today, I am gonna share a recipe which you can use as a side dish for idli/dosa. I hope your child will love this chutney and ask for more idli/dosa.

Ingredients

  1. Chow chow (chayote) – half
  2. Onion – 1 chopped
  3. Tomato – 1 chopped
  4. Garlic – 2 or 3 cloves
  5. Tamarind – little amount (optional)
  6. Urad dhal – 1 tsp
  7. Curry leaves – 10 to 15
  8. Oil – 1tbsp
  9. Mustard – 1tsp
  10. Asafoetida – 2 pinch

Recipe

Take half a chayote and remove the seed in it. Now, peel the skin of it before cut it into small pieces.

Now, heat a pan and pour oil in it. Add urad dhal and fry it. Once it becomes golden brown, add the chopped onion and garlic into it and saute until the onion becomes soft. Then add chayote, small ball sized tamarind for tangy taste and curry leaves and saute for 2minutes.

Now, you can add the chopped/mashed tomatoes and saute for a minute. Low the flame and close the pan with a lid. Wait until the tomatoes become mushy in texture.

Once it is done, off the flame and let the mixture cools completely. Now, you can put this into a mixer jar and grind into a fine paste. Add a little amount of water if needed to attain soft texture.

Note

For children above one year, you can add little amount of salt and spice for added flavors

In addition to this, you can temper the chutney for added taste. For tempering, pour a teaspoon of oil into a tadka pan and add few mustard seeds. Once mustard starts sputtering, add asafoetida and off the flame. Pour this into the chutney. That’s it. Chow chow chutney is ready to serve for your little one with idli/dosa.

Health Mix (Sathu Maavu) for Babies

Hi Folks! Today, I am gonna share the health mix recipe which I have prepared for my little kid. You can start using this health mix after 20 to 30 days of introduction of solid foods. This will help you to know whether your baby is allergic to any particular food and also your babies digestive system should be adapted to different solid foods you give. So, always ensure that these criteria are met before you make this recipe for your baby.

Note

Always don’t force your baby to eat more quantity. If you do this, there are chances that your baby might hate that particular food in future.

Procedure

Wash each ingredient separately once and make them dry either using fan or using sunlight. Wait until the components do not have water in it. You can use tissue papers to make the drying process quicker. Now, take a pan and heat it for seconds. Then, low the flame and add each ingredients separately. Once you felt some little crispy sound while sauting the item or when you see color change in some items, you can pour it to some plate to cool the component before you grind.

Remember!

Don’t add oil or water into the pan for frying any ingredient

Likewise, do the same process for all the ingredients. Remember, don’t fry the items for a longer time as it will reduce the nutrition present in the cereals. Also, it will give the health mix a bitter taste when you over fry the ingredients.

Once you pan fried all the ingredients, mix them and cool it completely. Now, you can grind the mixture either in batches using mixie or you can grind it with the help of a mill if you have higher quantity. I used mixie and it came out well.

Sieve the powder using a strainer to get the coarse and soft particles separately. Now, grind the coarse particles and do the same process again.

That’s it. Your health mix is ready. You can store this in an air tight container and use it for more than 2 months with room temperature and 3 to 6 months if you keep safely in a refrigerator.
